THE INNER CALM

DR. P. P. SHARMA

Engage in worship, O heart,

What if thou treadest

the dusty road

through the world’s mart

–the common chores

cannot be left unattended; granted,

but in Lord’s adoration contented

thou cannot like a bark be

afloat in the sea.

without the sea getting into thee.

Be in the world

but not of it–that’s it.

Keep firm hold on Him

what if in the rough trough

thou art being headlong hurled.

Stick out like the lotus

never by turbulent waves swirled.

Smear thyself, O heart,

with unction of the Lord’s name

the passions (so hard to shake off)

like the sticky fluid of the jack fruit

will leave thee uncontaminated,

in the inner calm

all fury spent and abated.
