THE HIMALAYAS

C. C. JHAVERI

Yonder before my dazed eyes unroll majestically,

Colossal serried ranges of the mighty Himalayas,

Sprawling like a giant, stretching out extensively

In the shadows of Eternity,

Gazing at infinite space.

The great Gautama, the Panda vas and a grand galaxy

Of Prophets, Truth Seekers, Sages and great Rishis

Came here to rest, to stay, to resign and meditate,

To seek, to find, to know

The way to Man’s salvation.

In the dim glow of dawn, in the grand carnival of sunset,

The vision of eternal snow rocks the mind into a reverie,

Kindles in heart’s loneliness a blaze of purest ecstacy,

A reality beyond conception,

A dream mirrored in memory.

Myriad of streams riding out of their mountain retreats,

Winding, wandering, murmuring sweep along the green gorges,

Swell into mighty rivers, roll, roll on, into ocean slip

Singing idyllic melodies

Of their epic pilgrimage.

Eternal guardians of our ancient culture and great heritage,

Abode of Gods, Sanctuary of Bliss, symbol of Timelessness,

Mecca of mountaineers, a vision of phenomenal loveliness,

Where Heaven meets Earth,

And God unto Man speaks.

The breath-taking panorama attuned to profound tranquility

Echoes with mute voices of silence emanating from the Beyond.

Here man unfettered walks in the sublime shadow of Eternity

With thoughts extinguished

Entranced in deep ecstacy.

The aura of solemn silence hallowed by divine conscious

Transforms vast expanses of the giant ranges into a Paradise

Of infinite Beauty immersed in transparent peace and harmony.

In this serenity one feels

Face to face with oneself.
